SMS manual development

The manual your operation runs on

Most safety manuals are somebody else's document with a name changed at the top, which is why nobody reads them and why they do not survive contact with an audit. This one is written from how you actually work.

An SMS manual in the RISE manuals library beside the emergency response plan and hangar maintenance SOPs, its introduction describing hazards and risk across hangar, line and ground operations, beside a safety lead and a technician in a hangar workshop and two colleagues reviewing at a laptop

Why it matters

A manual that describes an operation nobody recognizes is worse than none, because it tells everyone the safety program is paperwork. The cost arrives twice. Day to day, people stop consulting a document that does not describe the job they actually do, so the processes written in it quietly stop happening. Then a reviewer asks three people how something works, gets three answers, and none of them match the page. The distance between the document and the operation is the finding.

What you end up with

  • A complete SMS manual, written for your operation
  • Processes that match what your people already do
  • A document your team can find themselves in

Questions

Questions about sms manual development

How long does an SMS manual take to write?
It depends on the size of the operation and how much already exists in writing. A small flight department with existing procedures is faster than one starting from nothing. The first conversation establishes the scope and the timeline before any work is committed.
Will the manual match the software?
Yes. The manual is written knowing the processes will run in RISE, so the forms, the risk process and the record keeping described in the document are the ones that exist in the system rather than ones somebody has to recreate by hand.
Do we own the manual afterwards?
Yes. It is your document. You can change it, take it elsewhere, or keep developing it internally once the engagement ends.

Where to start

Tell us about your operation

A call about how your program runs today and the areas where it could be stronger. If this is the service you need, we will talk about what comes next. If it is not, we will point you toward the support that would help. Either way, you come away knowing what to do next. No obligation.
