Risk profile and objectives

The hazards that apply to this operation

Every operation inherits a generic list of hazards from somewhere. A risk profile is the work of establishing which of them actually apply to you, which ones you are exposed to most, and what your safety objectives should be as a result.

Risk evaluations in RISE by status and created over time, with the reports list, beside safety leads in hi-vis walking a workshop floor and pointing out an exposure

Why it matters

Without a profile, safety effort goes wherever the last incident was, which is rarely where the next one will be. Every operation has finite attention, and the default way of spending it is recency: whatever just happened gets a new procedure, while the exposures nobody has had a scare from yet get nothing at all. What this produces is a defensible answer to where the next hour of effort should go, one that holds up when somebody asks why there and not somewhere else.

What you end up with

  • A risk profile built from your operation, not a template
  • Safety objectives that follow from it
  • A basis for deciding where effort goes

Questions

Questions about risk profile and objectives

What is a safety risk profile?
A structured view of the hazards a specific operation is actually exposed to, ranked by the risk they present. It is the basis for deciding where safety effort goes, and it is what makes safety objectives specific to an operation rather than generic.
How is a risk profile different from a hazard register?
A hazard register lists hazards as they are identified, over time. A risk profile is a deliberate assessment of the operation as a whole, usually built at a point in time and reviewed periodically, to establish the overall shape of the risk being carried.

Where to start

Tell us about your operation

A call about how your program runs today and the areas where it could be stronger. If this is the service you need, we will talk about what comes next. If it is not, we will point you toward the support that would help. Either way, you come away knowing what to do next. No obligation.
